Delsey Stockton wants to “get back in cute shoes”. So she went to Martinsville Physical Therapy to get help. The physical therapists there have been working with her to increase her strength and range of motion. They have also given her a home exercise plan and taught her how to make an icepack. Delsey says, “Everyone’s been real nice”. Delsey chose Martinsville Physical Therapy based on a friend’s recommendation and because its location was convenient for her. With the help of physical therapy, Delsey is looking forward to the day when she can get out of her sneakers!
Success Stories
Jacquie’s Physical Therapy Story
Jacquie’s physician prescribed physical therapy after she had an arthoscopic debridement procedure on her knee. Upon the recommendation of a family member, she chose Danville Orthopedic & Athletic Rehab as her physical therapy provider. Jacquie primarily works with Kate Albright, PT, Physical Therapist at DOAR Central in Danville, Virginia. A normal therapy visit includes “land” exercises in the gym area, as well as aquatic therapy in the pool. She plans to join the Alumni Program when her therapy is concluded.
Here’s a summary of Jacquie’s experiences with physical therapy, in her own words:
When I started therapy, Kate told me it was going to take time. I couldn’t climb steps, and I was having trouble standing for long periods of time, like for washing dishes. Now I can tell a big difference when I’m going up the stairs, and I can do dishes without stopping to rest. I can put on my shoes and clothes by myself, which I couldn’t do before.
This has been the best place for me. I told my mama, this is place where every person is nice. Everyone is patient, friendly, and they are not afraid to be hands on. They keep you informed, and let you know your progress. They don’t just write something down and not tell you what’s going on. They are always reassuring you. They take time and work with me, and I’m getting better. When they release me from therapy, I’m going to come here for the Alumni Program.
Barry’s Physical Therapy Story
Barry received physical therapy at Therasport Physical Therapy in 2006 and again in 2011. He came in 2006 when he had a miniscus messed up, and he returned in 2011 after a knee replacement. Barry worked with Diana Rizza, PT, Jennifer Davis, DPT, and Amy Lynch, MPT. Here is Barry’s story, in his own words:
“In 2006, it went great. I couldn’t avoid surgery anymore by 2011; I knew in 2006 that knee replacement would eventually be needed. After my knee replacement in 2011, I started physical therapy somewhere close to work, but after six visits, I hadn’t made any improvements. So I came back here and begged them to take me back. They said they would help me — and they did. Before I came here, my doctor said I needed a change. My range of motion was 9 on a scale with 10 being bad. I got to a 2, close to a 1. When I came in, I could extend my legs on the table so that two hand widths could fit under my knee — when I finished, my knee was touching the table.
I worked with everyone here, and all the staff were really super to work with. They were intense, but always with a smile. Diana told me it would be harder because we were starting in the middle, so we’d really have to be on top of it. Now I am using some weights and exercises that Diana recommended. My least favorite part of therapy was getting stretched, and my favorite was when it was over every day. I was working, so the staff worked with me really well as far as scheduling.
It was probably 30 miles away, but it was well worth the drive. I can now walk without pain and walk up and down steps. If you don’t go to therapy after surgery, you are not going to get your full range of motion back. And there is a big difference in therapists. Just because they look small doesn’t mean they are not strong. I believe if you don’t get the care you need, you’ll start having other problems. For me, if I had kept walking the way I was, I would have trouble with my hip.”
Alice’s Physical Therapy Story
Alice is a patient at Therasport Physical Therapy in Summerfield. She previously received physical therapy at Therasport after she had arthoscopic surgery on her knee. So when she started having some knee pain on the other leg, she returned to Therasport, and she is currently working with Diana Rizza, PT.
What are your goals?
Reducing pain. I couldn’t walk distances without pain or climb up and down the stairs. My doctor suggested physical therapy, and I want to avoid surgery. We are going on a trip to Prague, so I want to get my knees so they don’t hurt.
How would you describe your progress toward your goals?
The first time, I improved my range of motion and reduced my pain level. Everything really improved. I am still working this time.
How would you describe the style of your physical therapist?
Diana is very good — there is a lot of warmth that is very nice and not often found. She always asks how I’m doing, what my pain level is, and if I’m able to do things I haven’t before.
What is your typical routine each visit?
Ultrasound, leg exercises, Biodex, bike, leg press. We added a weight today and increased the time. I know I’m working toward a goal, and you know the end product is good.
Barbara’s Physical Therapy Story
Barbara is a current patient at Therasport Physical Therapy in Summerfield. Barbara started physical therapy in April after she tore her rotator cuff and had surgery to repair it. She works with Diana Rizza, PT and Darlene Page. .
What were your goals and what types of activities were you unable to do before starting services?
I wanted to regain my mobility and strength. I’m an artist, so reaching up is important if you’re working on a big canvas. I was also unable to do daily chores like brushing my teeth, fixing my hair, or reaching into a cabinet to get a glass.
How would you describe your progress toward your goals?
I’ve made tremendous strides — night and day. I had to go buy an electric toothbrush, and now I can brush my teeth and dress myself. I’m still working on reaching.
What is your favorite and least favorite part of each visit?
My favorite part is just being here around nice people and working on my goal to get full use of my arm. My least favorite part is that the stretching hurts, although it is for your benefit. No pain, no gain!
How would you describe the styles of your physical therapist?
She’s been great; she’s very methodical. Her emotions are smooth, and she is gentle and firm. I have been doing exercises at home that Diana gave me, and it has helped. I have had an excellent all around experience with Diana and Darlene.
If a friend was recommended for physical therapy services, but was skeptical about starting, what would you say?
It’s well worth the time and money to be able to function to your full capacity.
