Candace is a patient at Roxboro Physical Therapy, where she works with Michael Tamaddoni, DPT, and Sarah McDowell, ATC. She also utilizes DOAR South Boston for aquatic therapy. Here is her physical therapy story, so far:
Why did you begin physical therapy services?
I have congenital hip dysplasia. Because of my hip, I also have back and knee issues. Before my hips started bothering me, I was pretty active. I liked to dance, sing, and go boating on the lake. By the time I had my hip replacement, my activity was very minimal! I only went where I absolutely had to go. I had crutches, but my movement was not very good. I basically couldn’t walk.
Describe your progress so far.
My doctor told me that my recovery would be a very slow process. That’s hard for me, because I want to be able to do the things that I want to do! After several weeks of home health physical therapy, I was able to start outpatient physical therapy. I chose Roxboro Physical Therapy because a family member recommended it. She told me that everyone was very pleasant and she felt like she was getting the care that she needed.
What was your biggest concern before starting physical therapy services?
My biggest concern about physical therapy was that I wanted one-on-one attention. I definitely get that here! My favorite part is the people, because I feel comfortable with them… Michael is very thorough. When he did my evaluation, he really listened to me. Every time I come in, he uses what I tell him about how I’m feeling to adjust my treatment. He pushes me, but not to the limit of hurting too much when I leave.
What are your goals for the remainder of your physical therapy treatment?
Since starting physical therapy, I’ve built a lot of my strength back. My mobility has improved – I’ve gone from walker to a cane. I would love to be able to walk normally again, without any type of assistance, and to feel stable and safe in doing that. I would love to be able to dance again!
