A second time DOAR & Affiliates Scholar, Ryan Barker is a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. Ryan is a Theatre Arts major and member of the Casual Comedy Club, an improvisational comedy group. He plans to graduate in May 2014. Tyler Mathena
Tyler Mathena is a sophomore at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia. As a second time DOAR & Affiliates Scholar, Tyler tells us he has changed his plans from majoring in pre-med to computer science. When not busy with school or the Monarch Chess Club, Tyler finds time to play soccer recreationally. Tyler is a 2011 Graduate of Merit from Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, Virginia. He is the son of Cindi Mathena, a physical therapist assistant at Danville Orthopedic & Athletic Rehab.

Benjamin Smith is an electrical and computer engineering major at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. He expects to graduate from Virginia Tech in May 2014. Until then, he’ll be busy in the classroom (he’s been on the Dean’s List since Fall 2010) and out: Ben was a summer intern for NASA. He has also gained experience as an intern for BIT Systems in Reston, Virginia; an undergraduate researcher and an intern at Virginia Terrain and Performance Laboratories; and an intern at Intelligent Transportation Laboratories, both in Danville, Virginia. Ben is a 2010 graduate of Chatham High School in Chatham, Virginia. Ben is the stepson of Melissa Smith, a physical therapist assistant at Danville Orthopedic & Athletic Rehab.
Shawna Smith
Shawna Smith is a freshman at the Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia. Shawna is pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing. Nursing school is anything but easy, but we think Shawna will be just fine thanks to her experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and her obvious passion for the field. Shawna writes, “Nursing is probably the most personally rewarding job there is… As a nurse, I will be able to make an impact on my community and the lives of my patients and their families.” Shawna is a 2012 honor graduate of Chatham High School in Chatham, Virginia. She is the stepdaughter of Melissa Smith, a physical therapist assistant at Danville Orthopedic & Athletic Rehab.
Sarah Turner
Sarah Turner is a freshman at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Sarah aspires to major in Journalism and Mass Communications, pursue internships in the field, and join the staff school’s newspaper. Sarah also plans to continue playing the violin and participating in mission trips. We know from her track record of honors, service, and extracurriculars that Sarah will achieve anything she sets her mind to; we just hope she also finds time to have some fun! Sarah is a 2012 honor graduate of George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia. She is the daughter of James Turner, a physical therapist at Danville Orthopedic & Athletic Rehab, and Robin Turner, a nurse at our sister company, All Care Home Health.
